Catholic Schools and Other Educational Institutions
Strategic planning in Catholic and faith based contexts is not just about goals — it’s about mission, faith, and community growth.
Drawing from High Impact Leadership for Catholic Schools, my approach helps leaders align vision, people, and measurable outcomes to create plans that truly bear fruit.
Purpose and Philosophy
Every Catholic organization has a sacred mission. Strategic planning allows that mission to become visible, measurable, and sustainable.
Through a collaborative process, we define not only what you will do but also why and how it serves the Gospel.
This process engages pastors, principals, faculty, and stakeholders — ensuring that planning becomes formation in leadership and communion.
The Seven Steps of Catholic Strategic Planning
(Adapted and expanded from “High Impact Leadership for Catholic Schools”)
1. MISSION: Ground the Process in Mission
We begin with prayer, reflection, and clarity about the school or institution’s Catholic identity.
Mission statements are not rewritten — they’re reawakened.
Focus questions:
What is God calling our community to become?
How clearly do we express our mission in daily practice?
2. REALITY: Assess the Current Reality
We gather the data, stories, and perceptions that reveal where your community stands.
Tools used:
Stakeholder surveys and focus groups
Enrollment, finance, and academic data
Catholic identity and climate assessments
Outcome:
A Mission Effectiveness Report summarizing strengths, needs, and opportunities.
3. PRIORITIES: Identify Strategic Priorities (Main Goals)
With clarity of mission and data in hand, we identify 3–5 key strategic priorities.
Examples:
Strengthening Catholic identity across curriculum and culture
Increasing enrollment and parent engagement
Building leadership pipelines for sustainability
Enhancing academic excellence through mission-aligned standards
Goal:
Focus your energy where it matters most.
4. OBJECTIVES: Develop Measurable Objectives
Each priority becomes actionable through SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).
We co-create:
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)
Timeline and responsible persons
Metrics dashboards to track progress.
As the wise saying goes: What is not measured rarely becomes mission.”
5. ENGAGE ALL and Communicate
Transparency and collaboration turn plans into shared ownership.
We train leadership teams to communicate the plan’s purpose, celebrate progress, and engage all stakeholders — from parishioners to parents.
Outputs:
Strategic Plan presentation templates
Parish/school communication materials
Leadership talking points and newsletters
6. EXECUTE and Accompany
Execution is where faith meets discipline.
I accompany leadership teams through the early stages of implementation, ensuring systems of accountability and encouragement are in place.
Support includes:
Regular leadership coaching sessions
Progress reviews using metrics dashboards
Onsite or virtual accompaniment
7. EVALUATE, Celebrate, and Renew
The process ends not with a document, but with a living rhythm of renewal.
We close by:
Reviewing outcomes against KPIs
Celebrating successes publicly
Setting structures for ongoing annual review
“Strategic planning in the Church is spiritual stewardship in action.”
